What do I need to sign up?

Your first name, your date of birth and a live selfie. There's no email, phone number or password. The app needs camera and approximate location permission.

Why was my selfie not accepted?

Make sure only your face is in view, you're in good light, and you're taking a live photo (not a picture of a screen or print). If the check thinks you may be under 21, sign-up is blocked for 30 days on that device.

Why is no one showing up?

Obscura only shows people who are active nearby right now. Try a larger search distance (up to 50 km) or check back later. Turn on “Notify me when someone joins”. While you wait, tap Try a practice chat to see how chats, view-once photos and voice notes work.

Why was a photo blocked or hidden?

An automated filter on your phone blocks photos that may contain nudity. If it got it wrong, just take another photo.

How do chats start?

Tap Connect on someone's card. If they also connect with you, a private chat opens for both of you. You can only have one chat at a time.

“Connection dropped” or stuck on Connecting

Chats are direct phone-to-phone connections. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then tap Attempt Reconnection. Chats end automatically if the connection is lost for 30 seconds.

My chat disappeared

That's by design: chats end when either person leaves, when the app is in the background for more than a minute, or when the connection is lost. They can't be recovered. After a chat ends you can send your last connection a ping.

I'm not getting notifications

Allow notifications for Obscura in your phone settings and turn off battery optimisation for the app.

Why can't I take a screenshot?

Screenshots and screen recording are blocked in Obscura to protect everyone's privacy.
